“How is this night different from all other nights?”
That question is usually asked by the youngest person at the table at a Jewish Seder or Passover meal.
We might well ask the same question because tonight is one of the most important nights in the Christian calendar. On this night Jesus gathered with his disciples in an upper room in Jerusalem. On this night Jesus gave them a new commandment, that they love one another. On this night Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, ‘Take; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them and said, ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many'. On this night Jesus was betrayed.
Tonight at 7:30 we will gather in the First Church sanctuary for a celebration of the Lord’s Supper and Tenebrae, or Service of Shadows. Through scripture readings and hymns the story of Jesus’ betrayal, trial, and crucifixion is told. As the Passion story unfolds, candles are extinguished and the darkness deepens until the last light is removed, symbolizing Christ's three days in the tomb.
You are invited to participate in this somber and reflective service as we continue our Holy Week journey toward Easter resurrection.
